History of REHDA Institute

The Housing Developers’ Association (HDA) Foundation was the brainchild of four distinguished founding members in 1992. These instrumental individuals are:

  • The Late YAM Tunku Tan Sri Dato’ Osman Ahmad (Past President of REHDA: 1978 – 1982)
  • The Late YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Soo Cheng (Past President of REHDA: 1972 – 1974)
  • YBhg. Dato’ Tan Chin Nam (Past President of REHDA: 1974 – 1978)
  • The Late Mr. Oon Chong Eong (Past Patron of REHDA)

Subsequently renamed as REHDA Institute, the foundation was relaunched on 12th July 2004 by the then Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Badawi, with former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as a distinguished witness.

The historic occasion was also witnessed by former Primer Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed, Former Minister of Housing and Local Government Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Ting, Former Minister of Finance II Tan Sri Dato’ Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Former Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Tan Sri Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister for International Trade and Industry Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed (current) and many other VIP guests.

About REHDA

Founded on 21st May 1970 as the Housing Developers Association (HDA) Malaysia, the Association is headquartered in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It was officially rebranded as the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (REHDA) on 13th October 2000.

From just 13 pioneering members, REHDA has grown substantially, establishing itself as a key player in Malaysia’s socio-economic development. Today, it represents over 1,600 developers across Peninsular Malaysia, who collectively contribute to approximately 80% of the Country’s total real estate development.

Beyond residential, commercial, and industrial projects, REHDA members play an active role in shaping vibrant and sustainable communities. Their developments incorporate modern planning principles, seamlessly integrating green spaces, infrastructure and smart technologies to enhance liveability.

As the leading representative body for private property developers, REHDA focuses on advocacy and governance, ensuring that industry perspectives are effectively communicated to government agencies and authorities. The Association actively engages with policymakers to advocate for regulations and policies that drive industry growth while balancing economic and environmental sustainability.

Respected by both the public and private sectors, REHDA remains committed to nation-building and enhancing quality of life through sustainable property development. Through its initiatives and collaborations, the Association continues to champion industry excellence and drive the evolution of Malaysia’s property sector.
