In the current post-pandemic era, we understand that everything from a house’s orientation on a property, to its layout, to the materials used to build it can affect the occupant’s overall health and well-being. Starting from the site selection to the completion of a project, there needs to be proper planning and guidance on which environments, materials, and features might be healthiest for its inhabitants, and expertly integrate them into uniquely ‘Healthy Homes.’ Future developments will look to incorporate more of existing elements and features such as lighting, ventilation, and open spaces into one’s physical dwelling and built environment which can help leave a positive impact on one’s health and overall wellbeing amid this unprecedented health crisis.
Healthy homes can also have a positive impact on the ever-increasing population of the elderly in Malaysia. According to the recent data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the percentage of population aged 65 years and above (old age) have increased from 6.7 percent in 2019 to 7.0 percent in 2020. As we have an ageing population whose needs including housing, cannot be ignored, such homes for the elderly especially among the middle-class citizens could gain traction. In Malaysia, due to cultural reasons and no clear or known successful model, most property developers choose to steer clear of such specialised housing, citing lack of sufficient interest.
Join us this 15 April 2021 at Wisma REHDA and listen to local and international industry experts who will look to share their views and experiences on the future of healthy homes amid this pandemic and the potential of developing retirement villages to house the future of the elderly in Malaysia.
