Sustainable Urban Development & Smart Cities Forum
The world is becoming increasingly urbanized as the population continues to move into major cities which are the backbone of a nation’s economic growth. In the last data report released by the Population and Housing Consensus of Malaysia in 2010, about 2.5 million of the population migrated to urban areas (rural to urban and urban to urban). The promise of better job opportunities, improved quality of life, accessibility, among other pulling factors, attracts people to cities but at the same time, it can lead to an increased impact on the environment. Cities should be healthy, providing housing and employment opportunities, meet environmental standards and be sustainable in the long run.
Through proper sustainable urban development planning, it is able to bring people, activities, buildings, and public spaces together, with easy walking and cycling connection between them and near-excellent transit service to the rest of the city. Smart cities have also emerged as a possible solution to sustainability problems deriving from rapid urbanization in existing and developing cities. New technologies hold great promises for more effective urban solutions and has the potential to bring benefits to cities when it is used in an open and collaborative way.
In the upcoming webinar, REHDA Institute is looking to provide a platform to explore further on the importance and best practices of sustainable urban development and how smart cities can be a catalyst for a smarter and more sustainable urban development.
